Read the file before changing it

- Read pixel width and height, both resolution axes and each reported source.
- Open the detailed result. Compare the available pixels with your intended print dimensions before deciding whether to change a label or resize.
What the reported DPI means
A 300 DPI label indicates an intended density; it is not a quality certificate. A 600 × 600 image at 300 PPI corresponds to a 2 × 2 inch print. At 6 × 6 inches the same pixels provide only 100 PPI.
Not specified means no usable physical density was found. Conflicting means the file contains values that disagree. Different applications can select different fields, so the detailed report keeps sources visible instead of hiding the disagreement.

Frequently asked questions
Is 72 DPI necessarily low quality?
No. Inspect the pixel dimensions and desired physical size. A large image can have a 72 DPI label and still contain enough pixels for a detailed small print.
Why are there two DPI values?
Horizontal and vertical density can be recorded independently. Check both axes, particularly when the file contains conflicting metadata.
Can a missing DPI value be calculated from pixels alone?
Not uniquely. You also need an intended physical size or a chosen density.
Can I check 300 DPI?
Read both axes and compare them with 300, allowing for format storage rounding. Then check the print-size requirement separately.
