Convert pixels to inches for printing

How to calculate pixels to inches

PPI is the number of pixels divided by the printed inches. Rearranging PPI = px ÷ in gives in = px ÷ PPI. A row of 3000 pixels at 300 PPI spans 10 inches. At 150 PPI it spans 20 inches, with the same amount of source detail spread over twice the width.

A 2400 × 3000 photograph prints at 8 × 10 inches at 300 PPI. The 4:5 shape matches that frame. A 3000 × 2000 photograph has a 3:2 shape: compare it with 4 × 6 before choosing an 8 × 10 crop. Density and composition are separate checks.

1920x1080 pixels to inches: two different answers

A 1920 × 1080 image has no fixed physical size without a PPI assumption. At 300 PPI, divide both edges by 300 to get 6.4 × 3.6 inches. At an explicitly chosen 96 PPI, divide by 96 to get 20 × 11.25 inches. Neither calculation adds detail or promises a sharp print.

Check the frame after the conversion of pixels to inches

The 4 × 6, 5 × 7 and 8 × 10 presets represent different shapes. If your available size is too small at the desired PPI, use a smaller print or a larger original. If the shape differs, inspect the intended crop or padding before calculating the usable detail. Do not stretch a portrait just to make both numbers fit.

Image pixels and CSS pixels

CSS defines 96 CSS pixels per CSS inch for layout. That relationship is not the physical density of every screen, nor a required density for a printed image. Here, PPI is your explicit print assumption; browser zoom does not change the file’s stored pixels.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change pixels to inches without changing my file?

Yes. This page calculates a physical size; it does not resize or rewrite the image. Copy the PPI together with the dimensions.

Will a 1920 × 1080 image fill an 8 × 10 frame?

Its 16:9 shape differs from the frame. Cropping or padding changes the usable area, and the available pixels must then be checked at that placement.

Why does a lower PPI show a larger print?

Each inch receives fewer pixels, so the same pixel row covers more inches. The source detail has not increased.
